Description and specifications

Research Compound DSIP is a laboratory material for analytical and in vitro work.

What is DSIP?

DSIP (delta sleep-inducing peptide) is a nonapeptide with the sequence Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu and a molecular weight of approximately 849 Da.

Research background

DSIP was isolated in Basel in 1977 by Schoenenberger and Monnier from the blood of rabbits in which a sleep-like state had been induced by electrical stimulation of the thalamus, which gave the peptide its name. Despite decades of research, neither the gene encoding DSIP nor a specific receptor has been identified, which is unusual for a biologically active peptide.

Mechanism and scientific context

The literature describes possible interactions with neuroendocrine systems, including modulation of the release of some pituitary hormones and of the stress response, but findings are inconsistent. The peptide's name describes the conditions of its discovery, not a proven mechanism.

Main research areas

  • neuroendocrine signalling
  • stress response in animal models
  • the history of neuropeptide research
  • structure and stability of short peptides

Level of evidence

Limited and inconsistent. Human studies are mostly small and older, and the mechanism has not been elucidated.
