Research Compound Semax is a laboratory material for analytical and in vitro work.

What is Semax?

Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro and a molecular weight of approximately 813 Da. It consists of the ACTH(4-7) fragment with an added stabilising Pro-Gly-Pro sequence.

Research background

Semax was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the 1980s. It built on research showing that short ACTH fragments have neurobiological activity independent of the hormonal action of full-length ACTH on the adrenal gland.

Mechanism and scientific context

In animal models Semax is associated with increased expression of the neurotrophin BDNF and its receptor TrkB in the hippocampus, modulation of dopaminergic and serotonergic systems, and changes in gene expression in models of cerebral ischaemia. Semax lacks the corticotropic activity of full-length ACTH.
