What is Glutathione?
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, and one of the main intracellular regulators of redox balance. It exists in reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) forms.
Mechanism and Scientific Context
GSH donates electrons in reactions catalyzed by glutathione peroxidases, participates in the regeneration of other antioxidants, and in conjugation reactions of glutathione S-transferases. The GSH/GSSG ratio is often used as an indicator of cellular oxidative stress.
