What is Oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a natural nine-amino acid neuropeptide produced in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. It plays peripheral hormonal and central neuromodulatory roles.
Mechanism and scientific context
By binding to G-protein-coupled oxytocin receptors, it initiates calcium signaling and contractile responses in specific tissues. In the brain, it is studied in networks of social recognition, stress, attachment, and reward.
