Research Compound Selank is a laboratory material for analytical and in vitro work.
What is Selank?
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro and a molecular weight of approximately 751 Da. It consists of the tetrapeptide tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg), a natural fragment of immunoglobulin G, with an added stabilising Pro-Gly-Pro sequence.
Research background
Selank was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in the same research tradition as Semax. The Pro-Gly-Pro extension increases resistance to degradation compared with tuftsin itself, which is broken down very rapidly in the body.
Mechanism and scientific context
Experimental work describes effects on the expression of genes related to the GABAergic system, modulation of monoamine neurotransmitters, and interactions with immune mediators such as interleukins. Because of its tuftsin origin, Selank is studied at the boundary between neurobiology and immunology.
Main research areas
- GABAergic gene expression
- neuropeptide signalling
- neuroimmune interactions
- peptide stabilisation with Pro-Gly-Pro
Level of evidence
Limited. Most of the literature is preclinical or comes from smaller regional studies.
