HMG (human menopausal gonadotropin): FSH/LH activity in research

HMG humani menopauzalni gonadotropin referentni istraživački materijal

HMG stands for human menopausal gonadotropin, a complex glycoprotein material associated with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) activity. In laboratory research HMG is studied within reproductive endocrinology and the standardization of gonadotropin assays.

Why is HMG analytically complex?

FSH and LH are glycoprotein hormones composed of protein subunits and carbohydrate chains. Glycosylation can influence stability, receptor binding and the outcome of functional assays, so primary sequence alone does not describe the complete analytical profile.

Research areas

  • FSH and LH receptor activation
  • comparison of immunochemical and functional methods
  • standardization of international units
  • glycosylation profiling
  • reference-sample stability

What does IU mean?

IU denotes an international unit of biological activity. It is not the same as mass expressed in milligrams. Conversion between IU and mass depends on the reference standard and assay method.
